Kay Francis Barksdale

Singer, actress, model, nurse, recording artist, etc.

You name it, she has and can do it all.

Kay Francis Barksdale, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, born in Danville, Virginia. A practical nurse and a secretary for the Unemployment Offices of Ohio, before coming to Scripps Howard and WCPO-TV. She has been receptionist and chief switchboard operator for 25 years. She is a recording artist with two gospel recordings now playing on 300 gospel radio stations. Her latest recording "How Great Thou Art" is playing in New Mexico.

Gospel singing is now her life. Although she used to sing in nightclubs in New York, Cincinnati, Newport and other places, she was in the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire and it totally changed her life and made a complete turnaround. She chose to serve the Lord and gospel music which is now "her thing". She had her own radio program on WTSJ-AM for half-an-hour each Sunday morning for a year and a half.

She sings all over the United States and Canada. She has been on P.T.L. and 100 Huntley Street in Toronto, Canada. She sings in all churches in Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York, Virginia and other places. She was one of the last performances at the Palace Theater before it closed and was torn down. She won the "Female Vocalist of the Year" 1987-1988 after being nominated for three years straight at the Taft Auditorium for the Gospel Academy Awards.

She is in the movie, "Say Amen, Somebody" singing with a 250 voice choir now playing all over the United States and on cable television.

Her greatest moment and dream come true was to sing in Historic Music Hall and she did for the 8th Annual American Negro Spiritual Festival of which 2,500 were in attendance.

She was nominated to sing at President George Bush's inauguration this January, 1989 and she did sing at Vice President George Bush's forum with the great Lionel Hampton and members of his big band. She sang the "Star Spangled Banner". Kay felt proud and honored. She sings at the Lebanon Correctional Institutional Prison, once a month. She thinks she has done it all, but believes there is still so much more to be done. But whatever it is--she will do it well.

Kay has two daughters, Adreiane and Demetria and one granddaughter, Ranee Alise.
